Jan has more than 27 years experience with Contender Sailcloth working within all aspects of the business. These days his main role is to concentrate on technical sales, development and customer support.
Jan has built a formidable reputation on the water with a history of 17 Sydney to Hobart Yacht Races, including a 1st, 2nd and a 3rd handicap results, winning an Etchells Nationals in 1999 as an owner helmsman and a laser Master World Championship in 2008.
Jan still competes on a regular basis acting as a sailing master on Phil Dash’s First 40.7 (winning the 2013 Coffs Harbour Series) and as a trimmer / helmsman on Steven Proud's ES 44 Racing Yacht.
This regular exposure to the sport ensures we are always understanding and up-to-date with the practical function of the latest products thus enabling us to offer great product advice to all customers.
This knowledge is also shared and enriched during boat-shows, trade-shows and international sales conferences.
Jon has worked in the sailcloth industry since 1993 and joined Contender in 2004 so he has a wealth of experience and knowledge of the marine industry. Jon understands the needs of our broad range of customers and can offer detailed technical advice across our complete product range.
He is an active sailor at club level, recently winning Division 1 of the Manly Yacht Club Winter Series onboard a Ritual 30.
This yacht, owned by Brian Shilland, is equipped with numerous Selden products like Single line reefing boom, Reversible winches, Furlex furler and Selden blocks. It also has WeatherMax covers and Contender cloth for all the sails.
David has worked in many varied fields and has an honours degree in Materials Science. Much of his time has been spent in research at CSIRO, SIEMENS and the University of Technology where he has partially completed his PhD.
On the sailing side, David has been an active racing sailor for more than 30 years across numerous classes. Most of his time is now spent on the officialdom side of the sport where he is a qualified World Sailing International Judge and International Umpire. He has officiated at America's Cups, Volvo Ocean Race’s and many other international events.
He mostly focuses his attention now on the World Match Racing Tour as an umpire and as the Race Officer for Hamilton Island Race Week.
At Contender, David is primarily responsible for the operation of the plotter cutter and those annoying IT issues.
Shane joined the company in 2007 and is the Warehouse Manager. He is a sailing and car enthusiast.
Amanda joined Contender in 2016 as the Office Manager and accounts person. Amanda has been a bookkeeper since 2002 and secretary for far too many years to admit. She certainly enjoys the variety of duties and challenges that Contender offers. Having moved to Australia in 1998, Amanda thoroughly enjoys the climate and culture that this country has to offer. She has a Bacheler of Arts in English under her belt as well from the USA.
Amanda is not involved in sailing at all, but as a jewellery designer she is attracted the multitude of bright and shiney objects Contender carries in its inventory.
True joined our team in 2016 as Production Assistant to work on the plotter cutter and assist in the warehouse.
